Rain and Thunderstorms Kick Off a Temperamental Week in Watertown

Watertown, New York faces a week of mixed weather conditions, beginning with intermittent rain and potential thunderstorms today and tonight. The weather will improve slightly over the week, culminating in mostly sunny skies by Thursday. The weekend will see variable cloudiness and continued chances of rain, with temperatures consistently in the mid to upper 60s.

New York Courts Approve $15 Broadband for Low-Income Families

New York is set to enforce a law that requires internet providers to offer broadband to low-income residents for $15 a month, following approval from the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The law, part of the 2021 budget, had been previously blocked by a lower court. Telecoms groups oppose the law, citing financial burdens and potential threats to broadband sustainability, but supporters believe it is vital for ensuring internet access for all.

Joint Effort Saves Syracuse Bunnies: SPCA Steps In with Surgical Aid

Hunter Hollow Bunny B&B in Syracuse, New York, a rescue dedicated to rabbits, has partnered with the Jefferson County SPCA to address their challenges of overcrowding and high medical costs for spaying and neutering. Faced with financial difficulties and a lack of resources, Hunter Hollow was unable to accommodate more bunnies and provide the necessary medical care. The SPCA stepped in to offer a monthly "bunny spay-a-thon," helping to prepare the rabbits for adoption and underscoring the power of collaboration among rescue organizations.

Law Enforcement Shooting in Lyme Leaves One Injured

In Chaumont, Jefferson County, a man was injured by deputies' gunfire after he charged at them with a weapon during a response to a domestic dispute at a Lyme residence early Saturday morning.

From Last to First: Heritage Hill’s Stout Takes Gold in NY Craft Beer Contest

Heritage Hill Brewery's coconut cluster stout won the 2024 "Best New York Farm Beer" at the New York State Craft Beer competition, an improvement from last year's attempt. The stout, designed to evoke the flavors of a childhood candy bar, features in-house processed vanilla and coconut cream, avoiding artificial flavors. Adjustments were made to the coconut content following feedback for a more balanced taste. The brewery adheres to the New York farm brewery law, using local ingredients and benefiting from operational incentives such as reduced costs and the ability to expand their service offerings.
