Warm Winter Day Sees JCC Students Taking Up Conservation Efforts at Local Zoo

On a particularly warm winter day, a group of Jefferson Community College students, including Laurie Crosby, dedicated their morning to volunteering at Zoo New York, located in Thompson Park. Their activities ranged from cleaning duties within the elk barn, specifically raking up feces, to feeding the zoo's five elk. This hands-on involvement not only contributed to the well-being of the animals but also provided the students with a unique, practical learning experience outside the traditional classroom setting.

Watertown Welcomes New Senior Center with Open House Event at Marcy Building

The new senior center in Watertown is set to open its doors with an open house at the Marcy Building, located at 245 State St., this Thursday. This initiative, supported by Neighbors of Watertown Inc. through the provision of free space for one year, aims to create a vibrant gathering place for seniors. Despite significant contributions, including a kitchen, video room, and activity space, further support is needed to fulfill the center's wishlist. Deb Doyle, a key organizer, emphasizes the ongoing need for resources to enhance the center's offerings.

April’s Eclipse to Host a 'Devil Comet': A Cosmic Conjunction Unfolds

During the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, comet Pons-Brooks, discovered by Dave Weixelman, may enhance the spectacle as it passes near the eclipsed sun. Watertown, lying in the eclipse's path, expects a large turnout for the event. Known as the 'Devil comet' since its discovery in 1812, its close approach to the sun in April has generated excitement among astronomers and the public alike. While it's uncertain how visible the comet will be during the eclipse, conditions ranging from twilight to clear skies could allow for its observation, potentially requiring binoculars for a better view. The news of this celestial event has intrigued many, including physicist Aileen A. O’Donoghue, who learned of the comet's potential through Astronomy magazine.

Weather Alert: Heavy Snow South with Chilly Sunshine in the North

The weather forecast for the north country and central New York contrasts starkly with cold, dry conditions prevailing in the north and heavy lake-effect snow in the south. Travelers are advised to exercise caution due to the snow warning in effect south of Oswego County. The upcoming days will see a gradual warming trend with mostly sunny skies, although there is a chance of rain over the weekend and into the next week.

Massena Traffic Stop Leads to Felony Drug Charges for Local Man

In a recent incident in Massena, a local man found himself facing serious legal consequences after being apprehended during a traffic stop. The individual, identified as 44-year-old Chad M. McGregor, encountered law enforcement scrutiny while traversing the Parker Avenue bridge. The Massena Police Department, upon inspecting McGregor's vehicle, levied against him charges of felony drug possession. McGregor is accused of possessing a stimulant and a narcotic, each classified under fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. Additionally, he faces charges of tampering with physical evidence, further complicating his legal situation.

Anheuser-Busch and Teamsters Forge Agreement, Sidestepping Strike Threat

Anheuser-Busch and the Teamsters Union have reached a critical agreement, preventing a potential strike. This new deal, set for a vote next week, promises job security, wage increases, and an improved health care system, ensuring the uninterrupted production of beloved beer brands and highlighting the company's commitment to its workforce and future success.

Sackets Harbor Shuts Down LaFargeville with Stellar Defense, Advances to Section 3 Final

The Sackets Harbor high school basketball team showcased a remarkable defensive performance to secure a victory over LaFargeville, propelling them into the Section 3 final. Under the leadership of Austin Griner, the Patriots demonstrated that their defensive strategy is as formidable as their offensive capabilities. This win marks a significant achievement for the team, who had been aiming to reach this stage since the previous season concluded. Their ability to quiet a high-scoring adversary highlights their comprehensive skill set and team cohesion, setting the stage for an exciting final.
