Scientists in Japan have discovered a new species of fairy lantern plant that feeds on fungi, marking the first flora species identified in the country in almost 100 years. Unlike most plants, this species does not perform photosynthesis and instead relies on fungal mycelia for nutrients. The discovery highlights the importance of amateur botanists and the intricate relationships within ecosystems.

Police Uncover Secret Recordings in Home of Watertown Sex Offender

In a disturbing turn of events in Watertown, a local man with a history as a registered sex offender has been apprehended under severe allegations. Authorities conducted a search at the residence of Nicholas O. Sherwood, 46, located on Ten Eyck Street, following suspicions of illicit activities. The operation, led by the Internet Crimes Against Children task force, aimed to investigate Sherwood's involvement in the transmission of child sexual exploitation material over the internet. The search not only confirmed these suspicions but also unveiled evidence suggesting Sherwood had been secretly recording individuals, further complicating the gravity of the charges against him.

Felony Charges for Man with 3D-Printed Gun Parts at Border

Customs and Border Protection officers at the Massena Port of Entry uncovered 3D-printed gun parts, including a lower pistol receiver without a serial number, in a vehicle driven by a 21-year-old man. The individual, who presented a Native Tribal document for identification, was subjected to a secondary inspection during which the discovery was made. This led to felony charges against the man for possession of an undetectable firearm, spotlighting the challenge of tracking and controlling untraceable firearms.

Closing the Wage Gap: New Bill Seeks Fair Pay Across New York

New legislation led by Assembly Labor Committee Chair Harry Bronson seeks to establish a uniform minimum wage of $17 across New York State, bridging the current gap between upstate and metropolitan areas. The Upstate Parity and Minimum Wage Protection Act aims to ensure fairness and address inconsistencies with a previous law that indexes wages to inflation but restricts increases under certain economic conditions. Bronson, alongside Senate counterpart Jessica Ramos, pushes for this change to benefit all New Yorkers equitably.
